Europa League: Shakhtar Donetsk – FC Sevilla

Just like the Champions League, the Europa League is also offering its semi final openers this week. The first one will feature a highly interesting battle between Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Sevilla. The current title holders, Sevilla are looking to win the trophy again this year but the Ukrainians have been giving an outstanding performance in most of their Europa League matches, which suggests we are likely to be in for some fine football on Thursday. Kicking off at 9:05 PM (CET), the duel Shakhtar Donetsk vs. FC Sevilla will be played in Lvov, Ukraine.

Shakhtar Donetsk

Shakhtar started out their journey in the Champions League were they were unlucky as they got drawn into the extremely tough Group A featuring two European heavyweights Real Madrid and PSG. After finishing third in the group, Donetsk qualified for the Europa League knock out stage at least. In this competition, the Ukrainians have been unexpectedly impressive though. After a surprising triumph over the German side Schalke in the first play-off round (3:0 on aggregate), Shakhtar gave no chance to Anderlecht Brussels in the round of 16 (4:1 on aggregate). The quarter final draw pitted Donetsk against the elite Portuguese team Braga but not even this side proved to be a real match for Shakhtar as they dispatched the Portuguese 6:1 on aggregate, booking their well-deserved spot in the last four. In the semi final, Donetsk will take on the reigning champions Sevilla but if they keep up with their recent performance, they might well make it past the Spanish favourites.

FC Sevilla

Sevilla are true Europa League specialists. Rojiblancos have already won the trophy four times – in 2006 and 2007 (back than as the UEFA Cup) and again in 2014 and 2015. While this achievement is unique itself as no other team have ever won the Europa League more than three times, Sevilla are looking to claim another impressive primacy. If they win the title this year again, they will become the first team ever to claim the trophy for the third time in row. So far, Emery´s squad have been mostly sailing through the competition with ease. Sevilla joined the tournament in the first play-off round after they got eliminated from the Champions League. In their first Europa League tie, Rojiblancos made it past the Norwegian side Molde (3:1 on aggregate) and in the round of 16, they dispatched FC Basel (3:0 on aggregate). It was not until the quarter final when Sevilla got in troubles for the first time. After beating Bilbao in the first leg (2:1), they lost to their La Liga rivals in the rematch (1:2) and it was the nerve-wrecking penalty shootout what eventually sent Sevilla to the last four.

Summary

An attractive and possibly very tight affair can be expected in Lvov where Shakhtar Donetsk will take on the defending champions in the first leg of their Europa League semi final series. While the experience and outfit quality is on the Spanish team´s side, the hosts have been unbeaten in their Europa League campaign, having a reputation of a very competitive and formidable team. With that said, it is impossible to determine the favourite of the first duel as the teams´ chances of winning the game are practically equal. To find out which of these two sides will eventually have the upper hand in the match, we will have to wait until Thursday night.
